Designer Dog
Why are designer dog owners so defensive?

I met a person with a golden-doodle and when i pointed out that it wasn't really a breed they became a snooty. Has anyone else noticed this? Why do the people care if their mutts are breeds?
To: Lily
A hybrid a mix of 2 SPECIES not breeds of dog. A wolf and a dog would be a hybrid not 2 breeds of dog.
They are mutts wether they are intentionaly or accidentaly bred.

People with so-called "designer breeds" (Maltipoo, goldendoodle, labradoodle, puggles, etc) know they grossly overspent for a mutt they very likely could have found at the local shelter (time to remind folks plenty of purebreds wind up in shelters, too). Every one of those dogs are just as unique and special. "But, you know, like, the shelter is soooo depressing, and like, it's so much cooler to pay major dollars to a "breeder" for the same thing!"

Because they know the so-called "designer breeds" don't breed true (ex: Golden and Poodle mix pups do not equally share the traits of both parents) because it takes many generations of careful breeding to accomplish repeatable traits and NO RESPONSIBLE, ETHICAL BREEDER WORTH THEIR REPUTATION WILL OFFER SUCH DOGS. "Designer dogs" are not AKC recognized, cannot be shown, and do not have any standard to aspire to. Wow, that's worth hundreds of bucks, huh?

Because they don't want you to think about the pups that were killed because they didn't sell, or didn't look like the so-called breeder promised, or were too sick/malformed to sell, etc. Pure profit, not a love of and desire to enhance the breed, is the sole motivator here.

They know and do not care that not only are they perpetuating a fad and thus responsible for the unethical and deliberate breeding of more and more intentional mutts of tainted genetic strain and uncertain health and temperament being offered, found wanting in their trendy new homes and dumped in shelters. (That cute little labradoodle grew up to have a Lab's double coat, size, and high-energy needs!? That Puggle is an aggressive fiend?)

Because they know and don't care that literally thousands of wonderful, family-pet-quality dogs are destroyed each MONTH in the United States despite being cute and sweet and eager to please (and even trained) because there simply will never be enough homes for them all. So they continue to die because ignorant, unthinking people buy their trendy mutt from a pet store/puppy mill/BYB/unethical "breeder" instead.

Because they know they are idiots and are uncomfortable that you recognize it, too. You're supposed to say, "oh my, you are SOOoooo trendy! I wish I was so cool!" You aren't supposed to let on that you know they were duped.

Because when you call them on it, whatever-Poo-or-Doodle owners will ineveitably claim, oh, I'm allergic--that's why I had to specially-purchase this trendy mutt! Well, if that's genuinely the case, there's no shortage of low-dander, wash-and-wear, low-shed dogs (Havanese, Mexican Hairless, Chinese Crested, Greyhound, any Bully breed, to name just a few). And there's medication. Or shots, if you don't want to be bothered with something related to your pet on a daily basis. But they couldn't be bothered with such uncool, un-trendy options. What a bore! Why THINK when you can run out and BUY! It's the American way! Buy new and throw it away when your interest wanes.

Of course they're defensive! They're ashamed, and darn well should be. I rank these people only slightly higher than dogfighters. The misery their actions cause animals in the pursuit of gratifying their own selfish desires is frankly disgusting. There is simply NO EXCUSE for it. Ever.

--------------
I should add that I have nothing against mutts, just the deliberate creation of them. I have four dogs: two mutts (though one matches breed confirmation better than photos in dog books) and two purebreeds, all of them rescues. And I wouldn't trade any one of them for anything in the world.
If I sound snarky and God forbid, offend any designer-dog owners, that's just too bad. I've seen too damn many truly wonderful dogs put down simply because there are no homes, so I've no patience or understanding for the stupid and selfish humans who perpetuate the 'designer-dog' trend. Their purchase dooms a shelter pet to death while helping to create even more animals that must be euthanized. That's nothing to be proud of or boast about.
